I assembled a veneer skin with marquetry for a closet pocket door for our bedroom and I am now preparing to press the panel. The door will consist of 4/4 maple frame with the veneered panel. Originally I intended to use quarter inch mdf as the substrate but that seemed too flimsy, so I bought half inch mdf. The proportions look better (4/4 frame with the half inch panel) but I am now concerned it will be too heavy (unwieldy). I plan to purchase commercial sliding door hardware so maybe this isn't an issue - I'd appeciate hearing from those of you who have tackled a project like this...

Anyway, I'm now considering a honeycomb core as a substrate but can not find tips on veneering over this material. Do I need to use a thin skin over the honeycomb, and if so what material should I use (are two layers of veneer required), etc. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
roger

ps - i searched the forum archives using the keyword "honeycomb" but did not find a post that addressed my question.

Roger,

You could put 1/8" skins on the honeycomb and there is no need to cross band the veneer.

The issue I see is around thickness. 1/2" is as thin as you'll get the honeycomb which puts your finished panel at 3/4". If you can live with that the honeycomb will work quite nicely.

Sincerely

Roger:

Just wanted to reassure you - I pressed 1/4" plywood skins on 1/2" honeycomb and it was a cinch. Of course this would be too thick for your application but you could use 1/8" plywood skins. Just drop the vacuum while pressing the honeycomb, then raise to normal when pressing the veneer.

Another possibility is the "lightweight" MDF carried by some specialty lumber mills. Doubt if homeydomey or lowes will carry, but our local Paxton Lumber has it. Don't know the percentage but it is somewhat lighter than regular MDF.

Thanks everyone for your reply and pointers on veneering over honeycomb. I am going to locate the lightweight MDF, since it's the only way to get the proportions correct. I also plan to order a few sheets of honeycomb and press up a sample or two and see how this is done.

Brian, thanks for the link - lots of good material to read. I guess my search for "veneering over honeycomb" was too restrictive.

cheers,
roger
