Subject : Platen - cheating?

I have a 4' x 8' bag. But I only have a 3' x 6' platen. I did that because I can not move a big heavy platen around alone (garage shop). At the time I made the platen, I thought 6' would cover anything I needed to make. I did have in mind a king-size headboard. But in my mind, I was thinking 72" not 76".

So now I am ready to make that 76" headboard, and my platen is 6 inches short. So I was wondering if a 78" caul would work. If so, would I need 3/4" caul or would 1/2" work? The headboard is flat.

Or could I make an extension? Has anyone experimented with multi-piece platens?

Regards, Carl

You really need a one piece platen. I use 3/4 mdf cored melamine almost a whole sheet 42x97 in a 4x8 bag. You can use a full sheet on flat work. The problem with the multi piece platen is the grooves need to go to the edges, I would think the bag would want to separate the platens and squeeze between them.

I have used multi piece cauls I tape the edges together with packing tape and put it to the backside.

If you have room, I use a cabinet-platform to keep my vacuum press and pump on all the time, it's on casters so I can move it as necessary. You might could work out some type of tilting platform to house the platen and pump for your situation.

Carl,

If you use a 1/2" or thicker caul on the side against the platen you can overhang the few inches you need.

I've done this myself.

Sincerely

Darryl,

Thanks for your input.

I successfully used a 1/2" caul 79 inches long, for a 77 inch headboard, on a 72 inch platen. I squeezed 1-2 inches of overhang on the nipple end, and 5-6 inches on the far end.

Looks great!

Hi, I have made platen in sections...the routed channels in each section simply line up when placed in the bag...works great!
