Recently I mixed about 500 grams of unibond liquid with the powder and I found that the powder did not completely dissolve. I used a liquid/powder weight ratio of about 12 to 1. When I spread the glue I saw small size powder granules in the glue. Why did this happen and how do I prevent it? Do I need to just mix longer, or did the large volume of powder necessarily lead to these granules? It has not happened before when I mixed smaller quantities

Steve,

A couple of questions before I answer you.

Were you using the light, medium, or dark hardener? Were the granules white or clearish and did they dissolve if you touched them with your finger?

I used the dark powder. They did sort of dissolve when I pushed my finger on them. Sort of: they became smaller and more spread out.

Sorry, I did not fully answer your question. The granules were dark in color.

Steve,

Its sounds like clumps of the shell flour. You may want to let the mixed glue "slake" for a five minutes and then remix. Slaking is basically letting a two part mixture sit for a short time and remixing for better blending. The other option is to mix electrically with some form of a beater.

It happens to me sometimes when I dont mix the powder in slowly. If I get any clumping on the panel I just smear them around with my finger or stick and then run the roller over it one last time to even everything out. The dark does not blend quite as smoothly as the medium. It uses a different shell flour base.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
