Hi,
I know this question has been asked and answered here a lot, but recent experience with gluing large panels has prompted me to revisit the question. I've done a bit of a search on the forum and can't find what I'm looking for.

We are currently gluing up a dozen 4x8 panels for a contractor. The veneer is paperbacked sapele, quite expensive. Using the directions that come with Unibond, I've been mixing at the ratio of 1.56 square feet per ounce by weight of resin. With laying on of a good coverage (we get a bit of squeeze out on the edges) this formula doesn't give quite enough. But I've used the same ratio on smaller glue-ups and there has been enough glue.

Anyway, I'd like to hear from others about how much glue you mix per square foot for both paper-backed veneer and flitch veneer. I remember reading a few post about this, but did I make careful notes? No........thought I could trust my memory. Ha!

Oh, we use rollers to spread the glue. And I use an accurate scale to measure quantities. I convert to using grams for convenience and the scale reads directly in either grams or ounces.

Thanks for the help,
Jeff

PS I won't be able to re-post on this thread because my screen doesn't offer the reply button. Something I've been in touch with Darryl about. Does anyone else have this problem? Contact Darryl if you do.

What is your substrate? Some materials suck up adhesives quicker than others.

If you can't reply here at the forum, send me an email, I'll post it on your behalf.

And no, I've never had browser problems here.

Jeff, what I've come to go by,is 300-400sqin per fluid ounce. It will depend on the substrate and the veneer. MDF and smooth ply will be around 350sqin and Luan may go 300. I had some Italian dyed Koto that I had to go 400 per sqin to keep the bleed thru to a min. I also use a glue applicator Darryl sells I think it's a Pizzi, I like it very much, applies the glue fast and evenly.

Make sure, if using foam rollers or similar to add extra glue for what the roller absorbs. This is one reason I like the Pizzi, it doesn't hold any glue in the roller. I know Darryl doesn't push these but if you ever use one you'll never use anything else.

Jeff,

I had a conversation with our webmaster guy on Friday and he is stumped as to why you loose reply buttons. It took him so long to respond as he had to access a Mac with a safari browser to try and duplicate your problem. About the only thing I can suggest is to use a different browser if you havent tried that already.

As far as glue application amounts, I'm not much help. Because different veneers and substrates absorb glue differently I have never tried to calculate glue coverage, I just do it by eye.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
