Subject : 2 Ply Bending Radius???

Hi, I'm working on an entertainment center with 2 pylons on each end(cylinders) with a 3" radius. I would like to apply 2 ply to these pylons, but was concerened about how tight 2 ply made with plastic resin glue will bend without problems/cracking. The 2 ply would be made from waterfall bubinga, with a poplar back.

Thanks in advance

Gregory,

You can get a two ply around your 3" radius with plastic resin glue. The key is too press the two ply on your column the same day you make it. If you time it right the two ply will be sufficiently bonded to itself but not to rigid to make it difficult for bending.

Thanks - I had one other Idea about this project - I recently purchased the "Working in a vacuum" DVD, and watched you veneer a cylinder using only yellow glue. Would it be possible for me to make 2 ply with the yellow glue, then apply the 2 ply to the pylons with yellow glue as well??

I only ask because this is my first "curvy" glue up with veneer, and I want to make the process as forgiving as possible.

The final finish on the pylons will be a sprayed on waterbased poly, which should be flexible enough to deal with the yellow glue...

Just brain storming - Thanks

Gregory,

Wether you use Urea or Yellow glue is really your choice. Urea always gives you a premium glue line but its your call as to how much its needed. I dont always use urea myself, it depends on the project. Using yellow glue in your application would be acceptable.

Darryl,

Thanks - I went back and watched your first video again, paying closer attention to your criteria for using a rigid glue - Since my project doesn't meet any of the five criteria, I feel more confident about using the yellow glue.

I'll let you know how I make out - Thanks again!
