Question 1: I noticed in the video that a respirator is worn when you mix the uni 800, but not once the glue is in liquid form. Are the fumes not toxic once it is mixed? Is it only the dust from the powder that is toxic?

Question 2: Should I use the white unibond or beige on quilted maple?

Question 3: I'm building a humidor, the plans say to construct the box first, sides out of 3/4" spanish cedar, top out of 1/2" mdf, and bottom out of 3/8" ply. Dim. of finished box is 12x18x6"h. The plan suggests to veneer after box is constructed. If I use my vacuum press to glue on the veneer, will the box collapse?

Question 4: I'm planning on using some banding in the lid panel, to surround a 4 way match. Should I tape this in place before I press the panel or inlay it afterwards? Do I have to do anything to compensate for the differences in thicknesses of the banding and veneer?

Thanks for any light you can shed
Steve

Steve,

I cant remember what happened when making the video and I havent watched it in a long time so I dont know the details. If I took it off mid way through the gluing process it was probably for some audio reason like I needed to talk while on camera. You would leave it on until your veneer is in the bag or just before that. Actually on small panels I sometimes dont wear one at all but thats just me. Hardly any brain cells left from so many years of woodworking and the chemicals that go with it, so whats a few more. Maybe thats why I usually have a dopey looking smile on my face.

Use the white or medium on maple.

Put a fitted piece of styrofoam or such material inside your box as you build it to withstand the pressure.

You can inlay before or after. If you do it while you press the veneer then you will need a piece of 1/16" black rubber to deal with the thickness variations.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Darryl thanks for all the answers. Can you please tell me if bleed through on quilted maple is a problem with unibond? I've only used yellow glue on glue ups, with no bleed through. Will bleed through affect the finish? Should I consider unibond blocker? Does Edensaw sell it out west? I couldn't find unibond 800 on their web site, can you ship the glue to Washington state? About the 1/16" rubber, do you know who sells this material in sheets? Could I use carpet underlay instead?

Thanks again
Steve

Steve,

You can get Unibond through Edensaw. I picked some up a couple of weeks ago at their Kent, WA location and they had shelf loads of it. Give them a call and they should be able to get some to you.

Whoops. Didn't read your post closely enough. I don't know if they have Unibond blocker. Sorry about that.

Steve,

Edensaw does not have the Unibond Blocker at this point as it is brand new product. If you are careful with the amount of glue you apply you should not get any bleed through. Using the blocker will give you an extra level of assurance that you wont get any.

I get the rubber from my local rubber supply house. Any decent sized city has one. You could also try a roofing supply company as roofers use 1/16" rubber roll roofing.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
