I've got a project to do that involves replacing the guilded leather inserts with veneer. There are three pieces: one, a rectangle( 4-way bookmatch ), the others, a quarter and half circle( Radial bookmatch ).The original leather was 1/16" thick and flush with the cross banded borders. The method by which I build the thickness is in question particularly in the Radials. I have my thoughts, but am seeking other input.

Thank you
David

David,

I would two ply the veneer inserts. If that is not thick enough, which my guess is it will not be, I would build up the recess areas with an additional layer of backer grade veneer and then press the two ply into the recess. A total of three layers of veneer should be just about right. The advantage of the two ply is that this will give you the ability to cut and fit accurately to the inserts.

Those are my thoughts without actually seeing the project.

Sincerely

Darryl,

Thanks for the thoughts. Perhaps,I should have been a little less general. I am definitely going to use three layers of veneer to build to 1/16", but feedback on the method by which I do that is what I was looking for as it relates to grain direction, seam over lapping and wood movement in general. In other words, would I be better laminating my initial segment blanks prior to 4 way and radial matching or laying up each layer independently and then laminating? Pros and cons?

Thanks,
David

David,

Well, I would try to go 90 degrees to each layer although with a radial it doesnt come out that way. As I think more about it I would be inclined to lay up the two backer pieces to each other first at 90 degrees and then press the face veneer to this two ply. You would end up with a three ply that would then get pressed to the table. This would be quite stable.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
