Subject : skins over honeycomb

Hi - I'm making a dining table with 3 leaves and was intending to use 3/4" honeycomb skinned both sides with 1/4" resawn mahogany. But now I'm wondering if I need to lay a plywood skin between the honeycomb and my "veneers". If so I would have go to 1/2" honeycomb with 1/8" ply skins, then my 1/4" mahogany. Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm using the honeycomb here more for weight reduction than stability, per se. Thanks, love your products.

Micky,

I dont recommend applying solid wood on top of honeycomb, not even at 1/4" I think the movement in the mahogany over the seasons will weaken the bond to the honeycomb.

You can definitely put 1/8" skins on top of the honyecomb but I would reduce your resawn mahogany to 1/8" or less. 1/4" solid will move too much to be glued to a plywood substrate. Normally I recommend 3/32" or less for solid wood laminating but mahogany is less expansive that other woods so 1/8" should be fine. This would allow you to go back to a 3/4" honeycomb core.

Hi Darryl-

Your answer leads me to another question....which would be the better strategy - 3/4" honeycomb with 1/8" skins, or 1/2" honeycomb with 1/4" skins (and is there a particular skin material that'd be best)? OK, so that's really two questions.

Thanks alot.

Mickey,

You will get a stronger panel if you use 3/4" honeycomb with 1/8" skins. The only issue with this arrangement, which really doesn't concern you, is that 1/8" skins over honeycomb has a really tinny sound. For tabletop I don't find 1/8 skins acceptable, even though for strength it's fine. Since your putting solid 1/8" on top of the skins then it's no problem, it will have a good feel.

As far as skin material, any plywood is really fine, it's not that particular. Don't forget, you need to put the resawn solid wood on the underside also otherwise the panel will warp to some extent.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
