I need help
12 hours ago I mixed up some 30 minute industrial formulators epoxy.
I kept it in the bag for 2 hours, when I took it out I noticed it seemed only very slightly tacky, which is sometimes the case. I used it the day before with fine results.
This morning disaste. It's not holding in many spots.
I really need to save thisif at all possible both the veneer & the substrate.
It's crotch mahogany (paperback) with a decorative banding on a curved
plywood substrate.
What can I do

THANK YOU
MIKE

Well I got the veneer off reasonably with only a few bad slices.
The 1" border banding will have to be redone with new material, that's OK.
I'm now working on cleaning off patially cured epoxy woth a paint scraper & acetone, which is tedious but with time will hopefully work. The substrate is fairly easy to work, but I'm not looking forward to scraping the paper back crotch.
Any other ideas

thanks
mike

mcnerney here

Well I more ourless have it solved. A combination of careful use of citrus stipper & lacquer thinner is slowly getting it clean. The paperback seems to be holding up OK. A light sanding & we'll try again.

sounds like a bad batch, or bad mixing. make sure the resin and hardener are not old. maybe try a small test batch before committing to the real job. also, its important to thoroughly stir epoxy for at least a couple of minutes (that's alot longer than you think you just stirred it), being mindful that you carefully scrape the sides and bottom edges of the mixing container. some people also recommend pouring the mixed epoxy into a different container just in case some un-stirred resin remains on the sides. also, i've gone through alot of gallons of epoxy, and i think the extra cost of the high end brands is worth the extra piece of mind.

mike here again,
thanks Jason for your thoughts. It definitely was my bad mixing technique at 8pm after a little wine with dinner & a badly lit shop. The Industrial
formulators epoxy (30 min variety)is perfectly fine. I had already used it successfully once & have since used it twice more, and the job is done including the one I had to redo. Although I did have to redo the banding, no sweat.
thanks mike
