I shamelessly made a 42" version of the edge trimming jig in your 1st video and have used it with great success. This
afternoon I had to make a longer version for a 48" panel, and started to wonder how you trim full 8' sheets of veneer. Any
reason I couldn't get a 4x10 sheet of plywood, rip a couple 9" wide pieces for my clamping surfaces, and glue up two pairs of
5" wide pieces for my uprights? (Thinking that a single 3/4" x 5" x 120" might have a bit of flexibility.) And if I might ask,
what's your take on the proper amount of slope per foot from the center of the upright to the ends, and do you slope both
the upper and lower uprights? On my first jig, I sloped both about 1/8" per foot, and the clamps couldn't pull the ends of the
clamping surfaces together until I removed the slope from the lower upright. This make any sense, or too many uprights,
slopes and such? T'anks.

Don

For a long jig like you are considering I would make my uprights 1 1/2"x 6". If it is 8' long I would have a 1/4" to 3/8" bow each end. 1/8" per foot bow is way too much. I slope both the bottom and top supports equally. On such a long jig I would also get the longest deep throat clamp you can get and clamp from behind when necessary

Darryl and Don,
What technique do you use to get a nice even curve on the uprights?
Thanks,
Tony

Tony,

I do a combination of joiner and belt/disc sander. For the joiner part on, lets say, a 4' jig I set it to take off 1/16" per pass. Next, I set the board down on the joiner so the middle is over the knives, joint it one way and the spin the board around and do the same thing to the other end. Next, I split the difference between the center of the board and the end, place that point over the knives and joint what amounts to the last foot of each end of the board. So what I have now is a board that is slightly faceted every foot with a 1/16" slope per foot. If I place the board on the center point on a flat table the two ends should have a gap of 1/8". To smooth out the slight facets I run the board over my sander. Since the faceting is not much its fairly easy to do.

Hope this is a clear explaination.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
