I am going to use a paper backed veneer on 3/4" MDF and would like to know if the "Hot iron and PVA glue" method will work.I would also like to know of a good source for paper backed veneer, I am looking for red oak if it makes a difference. Thanks, Dennis Beaupre

I just finished a job with paper back. I used the iron and pva method, and had great success. Make sure you get plenty of glue both on the veneer and the substrate.I buy my veneer from Oakwood Veneer Co. out of Berkley Mi. and am pleased with their product and their service. # 800-426-6018. Red oak is going for .99 cents sq. ft. About $ 32.00 for a 4x8.

Thanks, It`s funny you mention Oakwood, that is exactly where I plan to get my veneer! I e-mailed them the other day about shipping charges, ($8), and it turns out that it`s cheaper to have it delivered to my door than to buy it locally.Dennis Beaupre

Dear Dennis,Although the iron on technique does work, I would be careful of using it on large panels, you did not mention the size of your work to be veneered. I feel this is an over used technique, especially on raw veneer. At least on paper backed veneer the glue that bonds the paper to the veneer can withsand the temperature of an iron. No matter what, you are putting very high localized heat on the veneer and then moving that heat around, this is not the best way to bond veneer with PVA glues. If its your only option then try it. In the long run you may want to consider a press of some kind.I also recommend Oakwood for paper backed veneer, they are a quality, service oriented companySincerelyDarryl Keil: Thanks, It`s funny you mention Oakwood, that is exactly where I plan to get my veneer! Hi Darryl,Thanks for the response. The project I am working on is a pair of speakers. The sides are 12"x22" and the top and bottom are 8.5"x12". the fronts will be solid oak and the backs will be painted. I know that the iron method is not the best, but I am not planning on doing a great deal of veneering.Dennis Beaupre
