Subject : has anyone built a veneer guillotine?

I have a variety of ways to joint veneer, including but not limited to clamping between two boards and routing, hand veneer saw, jointing etc.., but none are as fast or effecient as a guillotine. Has anyone built one, or come up with a fast truing method for long lengths (over 6') of veneer? thanks Douglas Vincent

Hi Douglas,If you're interested in designing a small shop guillotine, I have an idea for the blade - an alternative for the 100" blade you're considering. My wife got a rotary cutter made by Olfa to cut fabric. It's simply a razor knife with a round blade that rolls around a central axis attached to a handle. We've been trying to use it with veneer without success, but I think that's because the blade isn't heavy enough and it tends to follow the grain of the veneer because it's not held in a jig next to a pressure bar. But maybe you could modify this kind of blade for a guillotine. Aren't modern paper cutters using round blades? Let me know what you come up with. I've been looking for something to solve this problem as well.Kim Carleton GravesCarleton Woodworking

I built some large panels a while ago (13' x 6') that were each done with 4 flitches per panel. I used a mirror cut technique in order to achieve tight seams, which worked wonderfully. After securing the flitches to a spoil board with tape in several places, I covered all but a small amount of the seam (approx 1/8" less than the diameter of the router bit) with 1/4" MDF, then used a straight edge to make the cut in one pass. Be sure to index your flitches to each other with pencil marks in order to ensure correct alignment when you tape the flitches prior to gluing. The beauty of this technique is that even if your straight edge is not perfectly straight, your seams will line up perfectly.: I have a variety of ways to joint veneer, including but not limited to : clamping between two boards and routing, hand veneer saw, jointing : etc.., but none are as fast or effecient as a guillotine. Has anyone : built one, or come up with a fast truing method for long lengths : (over 6') of veneer? : thanks : Douglas Vincent

Dear Douglas,If any part of the veneering process is hard to get into without spending a chunk of money, its the jointing of veneer. Aside from the simple hand tools or some homemade jig there is no reasonably price tool or machine for the job. Some people use the sliding table of their table saw, if they have one, but most have some variation on the clamping the veneer between two boards and routing. I have never seen a hand made guillotine and would doubt it would be practical to make one.Im afraid there are no easy answers on this one unless you have $10,000 or more to spend.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I have a variety of ways to joint veneer, including but not limited to : clamping between two boards and routing, hand veneer saw, jointing : etc.., but none are as fast or effecient as a guillotine. Well, I guess it is up to me to solve this problem and bring harmony and peace of mind to all the small shops out there. We have the technology so I might as well put it to use. If I ever get it built I will let you know. The exspensive part is going to be the 100" blade unless I come up with a different plan of attack.
