I have been using my vacupress for about two years now and each new project seems to present a new problem. For example, I veneered a piece of 3/4" oak used for a small solid door with quartersawn oak veneer on one side only thinking this thickness of oak would not bow. After two weeks the door was so badly bowed it would no longer close. I then started over with veneer on both sides and had no further problem. I now have a cedar chest in my shop that is about 60 years old and was stored in a leaky barn for years and the veneer is coming off the top and must be replaced. Can someone tell me how Lane got away with veneering one side only on thier Cedar Chests. The top is crossbanded with poplar and veneered with walnut. Three sides are not crossbaded and are veneered with walnut. The back is not veneered at all. I have all the old veneer removed but wonder what will be the outcome if I leave the old crossbanding and replace the walnut veneer on the top. Thanks for any help.

Its always interesting to see and hear about pieces like the one you describe that are fine, but for every one of those that did work out there are fifty more that didnt. Thats why I play it safe and veneer both sides. Wood can be a mysterious thing that doesnt always follow the rules. Its part of why I love wood and hate it simultaneously.sincerelyDarryl Keil: Lane got away with veneering one side only on thier Cedar Chests. I guess I didnt make my question clear. When you build a cedar chest you want the cedar odor to repell moths. You spoil the whole thing if you would veneer over the cedar on the inside of the chedt. A company named LANE has been making cedar chests for years and they often veneer on the outside to cover the cedar and make it pretty. I know both sides should be veneered but somehow LANE is still making thier chests the same way today and I wonder if the cedar is so light it wont warp or what. : I have been using my vacupress for about two years now and each new project seems to present a new problem. Ron, reread my post below, I believe it explains how they get to venner only one side of the cedar.

Ron, heres my take on this, the top was crossbanded originaly to help counteract the warping from veneering only one side much the same way plywoods mostly stay flat. As far as the front and sides, if the pieces are to be joined at the corners this in itself will keep them from cupping. Vennering only one side does not put a HUGE amount of stress on the panels, but it puts enough that if left unpinned, unsupported or just as in the doors you made its enough to cause the much cursed cupping problemAs a matter of precaution, I just do both sides of everything , but as you see this was and is not always the caseMike
