Dear Andy,First you can get maple veneer from a couple of companies like Certainly Wood inupstate New York, ph: 716-655-0206 or Flamingo Veneer in New Jersey, ph: 973-672-7600About using solid wood as the substrate, this depends on how large the marquetry sectionis. You can run the background field of maple in the same direction as the solid and thatpart will be fine. The only problem is, if your marquetry section is large and consumes much ofthe headboard you are likely to get splitting and possible delamination as the solid expandsand contracts under the different directions of veneer in the marquetry. In this case you wouldbe better using a more stable substrate such as MDF.For marquetry I highly recommend Urea Resin glue which comes as a brown powder youmix with water or the liquid type you mix with a powder (like Unibond 800). Urea's achieve avery rigid glue line which is what you need under marquetry.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I have a marquetry image I want to put into headboard for a childs bed. Several questions: 1. where can I get sheets of maple veneer for the background. My local woodworking stoor has: some sheets but they aren't long enough.: 2. should/can I use solid mable (about 1/2in thick) as the substrate. I think man-made material: would be more stable but the edge will be seen and I would like if acceptable for it to be solid: 3. Which glue should I use?: 4. Anything I should know about gluing up a large project like a head board
