I came across some fantastic Macassar Ebony shorts, really nice pieces but only about two feet long by 5" wide. I thought they'd make a beautiful sunburst.Problem is, I haven't quite figured out how to lay out and cut a sunburst. I'm sure the taping and gluing is straightforward, but can someone walk me through the process of the layout and cutting? Many many thanks!

Brian, I have laid up several sunbursts with good results each time. Most recently I did one in bees wing andiroba that turned out really well. I first figured out my angles and I cut a piece of MDF to the wedge I wanted. I then flush routed a piece of plexiglass to that. using a steel bench holdfast to keep things from moving, i cut the veneers one at a time using an "Olfa Rotary Cutter" I got at a fabric store. I started all cuts from the pointed end of the wedge, and the plexi allowed me to see the grain. When I had all pieces cut, I taped them into a stack and sandwiched them between the mdf and the plexi, with about 1/16 hanging out. I used a sanding block to true the veneers to the pattern and then I was ready to tape and press. Worked beautifully! Good luck!

Frank Pollaro had several OUTSTANDING articles in Fine Wookworking, which motivated me to take up vacuum veneering. He has softcopy at his website. A very good article on making a sunburst: http://www.flamingoveneer.com/Pages/PublishedArticles/index.html
