Subject : Veneer over solid oak substrate

I have an old desk that is being refurbished. The desk is made of Honduran (Cuban?) Mahogany and mahogany veneered plywood. The top is 37½ inches by 59½ inches and is made of solid white oak substrate about 1¼ inches thick with a face veneer of mahogany. Under the face veneer, there was a crossband layer of about 1/16" thick unidentified wood. All of the veneer has been taken off the top. I am contemplating two layers of crossbanding (I can't find any 1/16" veneer) followed by the face mahogany top layer. I am undecided as to type of glue: either PVA or Unibond 800. I would sure like some input. Thanks,Stumper

We used two crossbands of 1/40" mahogany followed by the face veneer of ribbon mahogany. It has been glued and sitting for about a month with no noticed ill affects. There is a bow of about 3/16" accross the grain of the oak substrate, but we believe that that was there before we started the veneering process because the desk was brought in with severe water damage to the original mahogany veneer top.

The glue joints on all four sides are tight and there is no evidence of any joint failure at all, including the mitred corners of the edge banding. We have no way of telling if the substrate is solid or is made of an odd number of plys, without drilling a hole on the bottom side. The bottom side is veneered with a crossband as well as a lesser quality face veneer. The top was glued with hide glue and I assume the bottom side is as well. We have narrowed our choices to one of three: 1. Two thin layers of crossbanding to match the bottom followed by the face veneer, all glued with hide glue on a vacuum press. 2. Same arrangement as above using Unibond 800. 3. Same arrangement using PVA glue.Stay tuned.........

Hope this helps, John.Stumper, You do need the cross banding of veneer on both sides of the solid core substrate prior to veneering your face veneer on. It will give you a balanced panel. Otherwise, you'll have warping and/or splitting problems. Think of how plywood is made, with alternating grain directions in each layer. It's always an odd number of plys. The orientation of the face grain on the face plys should be the same as the middle layer, be it solid core or veneer. Good luck, Daver
