: : : I have an old desk that is being refurbished. The desk is made of : : Honduran (Cuban?) Mahogany and mahogany veneered plywood. The top is : : 37½ inches by 59½ inches and is made of solid white oak substrate : : about 1¼ inches thick with a face veneer of mahogany. Under the face : : veneer, there was a crossband layer of about 1/16" thick unidentified : : wood. All of the veneer has been taken off the top. I am : : contemplating two layers of crossbanding (I can't find any 1/16" : : veneer) followed by the face mahogany top layer. I am undecided as : : to type of glue: either PVA or Unibond 800. I would sure like some : : input.: : Thanks,: : Stumper: Wayne, There's no need for the double crossband and either glue will work fine. Hope this helps, John.Stumper, You do need the cross banding of veneer on both sides of the solid core substrate prior to veneering your face veneer on. It will give you a balanced panel. Otherwise, you'll have warping and/or splitting problems. Think of how plywood is made, with alternating grain directions in each layer. It's always an odd number of plys. The orientation of the face grain on the face plys should be the same as the middle layer, be it solid core or veneer. Good luck, Daver
