Subject : Contact cement for veneering??

Contact adhesive? Can one get fair results with using contact adhesive for veneering (using veneer with no backer)? I am looking at buying veneer for $.30 sqft vs. peal and stick for $3.00 which is quite a difference. I have worked in shops with veneer quite a bit, but always had presses, but for do-it-yourself, a platen press is our of reach and I would rather not have to make a vacuum press. Using contact cement, I am concerned that the glue, which tends to be stringy and clumpy, may show up as bumps through the veneer. Any suggestions? Thanks,Emil

So can you use contact cement on all the areas except where the joint is? I have thought about doing this for my drum set.

Jason,Unless you are using a phenolic backed or two ply veneer stay away from contact cement. And even with these you would still use regular wood glue at the return seam.SincerelyDarryl Keil: So can you use contact cement on all the areas except where the joint is? Dear Emil,The more important problem with contact cement is that it stays flexible. The veneer will expand and contract with relative humidity and progressively weaken the bond. Some years ago I saw the results on a massive scale at a display company that had used contact cement on large curved store fixtures. Case goods were coming back repeatedly with delaminated veneer.Don't be tempted!

Dear Emil,Ditto on what Tom said, especially on raw unbacked veneer. Phenolic backed veneer would be a possibility since its like plastic laminate. I also do not recommend the peal and stick as that is a flexible glue line too.SincerelyDarryl Keil
