Subject : 1/8" poplar over 7/8" MDF

our company has a project involving panels that are spec'ed at 1/8" poplar over 7/8" MDF. They will be edged with mitered wood for a raised panel profile so the 1/8"poplar will be over the MDF & edging with the poplar having 1/4" overlap over the edging which will be profiled.
The panels will be trapped by a frame but gospel seems to be equalizing veneer treatment, i.e. both faces should have 1/8" poplar.
Any thoughts?

Overall it looks sound except for not having balanced poplar on the back, if I’m understanding it correctly. The picture didnt have poplar on both sides. I think the 1/8” poplar is a little thick. I tend to shoot for closer to a 1/16” for resawn veneer, but thats just me.

Hi Darryl:
The panels will be trapped by the frame. They will be painted on both sides before being attached to a wall. Not sure if they will float or be nailed. Hopefully the paint minimizes moisture absorption and they are inside a climate controlled building. I am willing to make the case to the owners that they could move if not balanced if you think it will be a problem.

I’d make the case to the clients if it were me. If they do warp, even though probably not much, they are going to wanna hold you responsible. It’s not so much that they are painted both sides, it’s that one side has a glue line that the other side won’t have. As the glue dries the side with the glue line will shrink without another glue line on the other side to oppose it
