Can't recall ever seeing discussion on plastic film used on both sides of item being pressed to protect bag from the glue.

I've been using 4 mil clear, which comes in 15' width folded back on itself several times and then rolled. Cut off a piece and there's likely at least one well defined wrinkle in the piece oF film.

I like 4 mil because it doesn't tear easily, but a wrinkle has noticeable thickness,

I wrap the piece itself so I can't smear glue on the bag as the piece is being inserted, so a wrinkle is against the veneer. I try to make sure all wrinkles are smoothed out, but missed one yesterday. So I think there is a corresponding compressed line in the marquetry. Water may swell the veneer and make it disappear, will start cleaning the panel tomorrow.

So I'd like to ask what thickness plastic film others use, how to do try to smooth out any wrinkles in the film, and if you've had a wrinkle leave a line in the veneer how did you deal with it.

Much thanks.

i'm definitely interested in the responses to this question. the last pressing i did i had exactly the same issue - the creases in the plastic telegraphed into the veneer. i was wondering, could it be heated a little to smooth it out?

for my next pressing, i was thinking about making cauls and using the 2' wide plastic carpet protector stuff - sticky on one side to tack down to the caul face. my pieces are happily 2' wide...

cauls seems to be a constant source of pain. what's the magic formula?

When I use plastic film, I go for either 6mil or 2mil. 6mil is easy to make lay flat with some masking tape and 2mil is thin enough that I don't care much if there's a fold in it.

Doesn't anyone else use plastic film?
