Today I looked at a 1930's era pool table. The lower (horizontal) rails, likely 1" thick mahogany boards, were reveneered about 12 years ago with highly figured qtd sapelle running vertically. The owner said almost immediately the veneer started showing some small bubbles, now on three of the 4 rails. He requested a price to remove the 12 year old veneer and apply new qtd sapelle running vertically across the rails.
After removing the old veneer and carefully sanding off the old glue, I'm thinking of making a two ply for each side, using backer mahogany with the length of the rail boards for the inner ply and qtd sapelle across the boards for the show surface. The two plies would be glued up one day and then glued to the rails the next day.
Will a two ply help with the cross grain issue?
