I have a residential bar top to be made out of crotch walnut. My boss always wants to use pva instead of urea formaldehyde. I don't have any experience with the u.f. but know it is the best choice for most applications as stated on this forum. I have used many types of pva's and have noticed the difference between them as far as open time, hardness etc.. Most recently I used the unibond one and was happy with it's features. So isthe unibond one the next best thing compared to u.f. for those who are " forced" to use pva? Secondly I am using mdf as a substrate as the crotch is in great condition. Do I need to crossband this crotch?

For walnut crotch on a bar top I would definitely choose the UF option. If you have to use PVA glue then I would go for the Unibond One as it offers an extra hard glue line and you want all the rigidity you can get with crotch. The other option would be epoxy, but that will give you a lot of bleed through. Of course you could skim coat the entire top afterwards with the epoxy which would deal with the bleed through, not to mention provide a very hard and waterproof base to put a finish on top of.

Even if you use Unibond One the skim coat of epoxy would be a good idea. I think of a bar top as a high moisture and somewhat abused surface. Epoxy top coat would offer extra protection for the crotch.

Aaron

If you are using raw crotch veneer, does it first need flattening? Lots of past discussions on flattening. And if raw, a two ply might be worthwhile. Of course, the bottom of the substrate ideally gets the same veneer treatment. Another benefit of u f is the open time. No experience with Unibond One so I don't know how its open time compares with Unibond.

Sounds like fun.

According to Dan at Certainly Wood the crotch is flat and sound. To me the unibond has a good open time but I would bet it's far less than the UF. The bottle says 45min to 2 hrs clamp time. Thanks Don and Darryl.
