Read some older posts on the product... so I was looking to see if anything has changed. Building a large desk with a veneered top. Last time I built this design the desk came out to heavy so I am looking to lighten it up where ever I can. The top... two concerns. One is adhesion and the other is durability. I did a drop the hammer test on the light and regular mdf and yes the light took a bigger dent. I glued some veneer down at the end of the day today and will do the test again tomorrow.

As I write this and I think of all the inlays I am going to do I'm starting to shy away from the ultalight ?? But what do you think?

Personally I would shy away from ultralight if it was me. Try MDO. Its a plywood based product that will be fairly light with a impregnated paper surface that can be veneered over with excellent sucess. Just give it a good rough sanding before gluing.

Not sure MDO plywood would fare better than lightweight MDF with your drop test. Let us know how MDO and even Baltic birch compare with "regular" MDF on your drop test.
