Subject : Demand for Veneered Work?

Even a few years ago it was common to have daily posts to this forum, but traffic has decreased quite a bit. The collective experience and generosity of the members make this one of the best woodworking forums I've had the opportunity to follow, so I'm curious about the decreased traffic. Have the members experienced a decreasing demand for veneer work from their customers, has the demand been more basic and therefore generating fewer questions, . . .? Regardless I am very grateful for all of the advice and support I've received from Vacu-Press and all the members of this forum, and hope everyone had a good 2013 and will see an even better 2014.

For the most part I work full time by myself but I don't do more than 2 to 4 custom veneer jobs a year. I am 64 years old & slowing down to a 20 hour week. One of the main things I have observed is that what people call wood, is what I call color. They want cherry wood stained to a color they like. When I show them samples of other woods they may ooo & awe, but don't go with it. This seems to be especially true with architects who seem to love various shades of gray, I've done some; and interior designers who are coordinating wall color, granite, floor material, and fabrics. For my own personal stuff I start with the wood of course & get everything else to work from there.
I have done my most challenging veneer/ vac bag work in the last 5 years so I'm not dead yet. But most of it is for myself.
At times I wanted to have a showroom similar to those marble/granite joints with the worlds veneers glued up & with a perfect musical instrument quality finish, (including the buffing). That probably won't be happening.
Both Daryl & this forum have been very important to me so thank you all.
The other forum I frequent is the official luthiers forum & believe me, there are many, many questions that can & have been asked there over & over.
It too goes through slower periods that people have talked about.
I don't know if there are any firm conclusions that can be drawn from that?
I do notice for my self there are lots of post & I don't even look at because it is probably something I don't need help with & someone else has already posted advice.
thanks for starting this Don

If sales of vacuum presses and veneering glue is any indication of the amount of veneering being done, then there's quite a lot of woodworkers veneering and laminating.

I cant really say why there's less discussion going on except maybe with all the information that circulating on the internet, on forums, in workshops and woodworking groups, more people have the information they need and dont require asking as many question...I'm just guessing.

Glad to hear the practice remains strong, and that VP business good. Maybe this year I'll find a project that pays for a new vac bag - hard to see my vinyl 20 mil bag for all the blue masking tape pieces on it. But then it's serial number is only two digits . . .

Hope all the forum participants have a good 2014.
