I was gluing up some two ply ribbon stripe mahogany on curved mdf panels. I have used this same veneer multiple times. I always use a small piece of the the green 3m painters tape on each end to hold the veneer in place while I put the layup in the bag. When I took one of the panel out of the bag and tried to remove the tape it was really stuck to the wood on one end. When I tried to gently pull it up, some of the wood fibers in one of the ribbon areas pulled up with the tape in about a 3/8" area. They are still attached to the rest of the veneer at the other end.

Any suggestions for repairing this?

Thanks for the help!

Dennis

Hide, yellow,or white glue would be my thought. The moisture in each will soften the fibers slightly so they will accept the bend. A bit of glue in the torn area of the veneer, press the fibers down into the glue and wipe well with a damp sponge to remove excess glue, than clamp until glue is set.

This has happened to me several times, so I now try to remember to lift the tape end on the veneer and pull the tape towards the edge.

Don,

Thanks for the suggestion. Since I am going to be giving then a wash coat of weak transtint, will the glue not allow the dye to take in that spot?

Thanks again,

Dennis

You're going to wipe well with a damp sponge after pressing the torn veneer down, to remove as much glue as possible. Generally I use hide glue because it takes a bit of dye and stain. After the glue cures you could wipe with a bit of mineral spirits or naptha and look for glue smear, sand with your final grit if any appears.
