For 40 years now I have been using a Makita 4" x 24" belt sander to sand all my veneer projects. The machine is finally ready to be replaced.
I wondered if the festool orbitals are good enough on a larger project.
and the hard exotics, curved surfaces, concave & convex.
What do you like to use

Boy Mike, you sure are braver than me, and you must have a very steady hand. I'd never use a belt sander on veneer for fear of plowing through. I have the festool orbital and really like it but I dont do veneering for a living anymore so I cant say if I'd be happy sanding a whole pile of panels. Festool has a nice belt sander too, although I have never used it. By the way, I have the smaller orbital. If you were considering one I would get their bigger orbital.

We use Festool Random Orbitals here for all our veneer work and I remain very impressed with this company. These are beautifully made sanders. I'll also toss out the Mirka Ceros sander, which a salesman recently brought in for me to try and all I can say is "wow!".....this sander is amazing. Very pricey though (close to $500). Has the feel of a pneumatic tool but is electric (brushless DC motor). I've been very tempted. Good luck.

I used to use a belt sander once in a while on veneer projects, but if one is using commercial thickness veneer that is a gamble for sure. All my random orbitals were just too slow though. Then I got the Festool 6". It's been a real money-maker and now I use it for everything. That includes a lot of curved work, as Festool has 3 different softness options for pad and it's a quick change.

I think I would buy the Mirka now if I didn't already have the Festool. Similar price, similar performance, but the Mirka is much lighter and about half the height.
