Hello,

I have learned alot from this forum. Reading through all the threads I noticed that Darryl recommended MDO plywood, but I also noticed that the recommended situations were not the type of work I'm attempting. I'm building a walnut coffee table approximately 4'x 3' with a burl top that has two 4-way matches side-by-side (8 pieces, lots of joints) and I'm thinking that maybe the plywood may move just enough to screw up the whole thing. My thinking for using the MDO is that it will be better for gluing the solid wood around the edge and easier to screw the top to the base. I know that MDF would be more stable, but is the MDO stable enough?

I like the MDO when I dont want the sag effect you tend to get with MDF and the way it takes screws. With that said, I use MDF most of the time and MDO when I need those qualities.

I dont have issues with edge banding solid onto MDF as I spline it on and it holds just fine. MDO, in my opinion is plenty stable for what you want to do. I think its a toss up personally. If you do use MDO I would make sure to rough up the surface with 80 grit for good adhesion.

Should this be a two ply because of the number of individual pieces? Presumably the grain will run the same direction in all of them.
