I'm considering dying some small pieces of veneer with food coloring. I heard that dying works best under vacuum. Do the small kitchen food marinade vacuums work?

Brent,

Dying works even better under pressure. Get yourself a kitchen pressure cooker and do it that way.

As Clint Eastwood once said,
"Dying is no way to make a livin boy"
Dying under pressure seems like a tougher way to die.

At the most recent meeting of the Minnesota Woodworkers Guild, one of our members demonstrated dying veneer in a vacuum chamber. It took all of about 15 minutes and it was pretty thorough. I think he found the instructions on the procedure and making the vacuum chamber on Joe Woodworker. The chamber was made of schedule 80(?) PVC 4" and 6" pipe.

I have also seen some results using Rit powdered fabric dye, note that it is the powdered dye and not the liquid dye. Marc Adams has a DVD on the process.
