Subject : Plastic Laminate over 1/2" Plywood

I've encountered BB plywood warping on me before I can get it into the press, but I want to post again.

My pieces are about 25" X 28" and I am applying plastic laminate on both sides. I'm using Unibond.

I could try to get the plywood straight prior to applying the laminate by wetting one side to make it warp back the other way. It's not terribly bad but. . .

Or I thought that maybe the Unibond would serve as a wetting agent and either:

1) Do both sides simultaneously in the press and the panel might cure straight or . . .

2) Do one side at a time, starting with the proper side to get the panel to move the opposite way. Then immediately do the remaining side.

Any ideas? Thanks.

David

David,

In general, veneer being as thin as it is does not have much of a laminating effect and won't flatten a warped panel. Plastic laminate on the other hand is rigid enough to have some flatening effect. I would glue both sides at the same time, the rigidity of Unibond will assist you here, and then leave the panel in the press a good 12 hrs. The longer the better. Make sure you use the same thickness laminate on both sides.

I cant guarantee a 100% flat panel but it should be pretty good, as good as you're practically going to get.

BB certainly has it's uses, but in my experience it's not that flat. 25 x 28 is not that big and .5 thickness doesn't help, but if you need really flat then BB probably won't cut it. What Darryl suggest is a good idea & may help. What is making you choose veneer core in this case?

I happen to need the thickness of 1/2" plywwod plus the laminate to equal a 9/16 panel for same size router bit to groove for shelves.

Also, thought BB would be stable. Need screw holding power, too.

Tried investigating Appleply but it's like gold to get around here.
