Can you veneer segmented or stave type columns. I would think that you could veneer the outside, and not have to veneer the inside for balance.

Are they tapered? are they straight taper or do they bulge taper?

They are straight non weight bearing, and just for looks.

I assume these are solid wood store bought columns? If so you should two ply the face veneer. urea resin glue as well. try to keep your veneer joints away from the stave core joints.
