Subject : inlaying in a veneer 1/42"

I have never tried to inlay a wood band inlay into a veneer that is only 1/42" which, I believe, is about standard today. I guess you vacuum press the base veneer and then after the base veneer has completely dried, you route to the wood band inlay depth. If this is correct, what glue do I use for the wood band inlay or do you put the whole piece back into the vacuum press using the same glue you used for the base veneer. Does routing in a veneer chip the veneer? Also, does it matter if the backing veneer is a different thickness than the face veneer?
Thanks, John

John,

Routing an inlay into a veneered surface is really no different than in solid wood, you just cant scrape and sand as aggressively afterwords with the veneer.

I dont know what your inlay looks like or how its configured, but whenever I can I make the inlay out of veneer as well and just tape it up with the main veneer you are using. This way there is no inlay work afterwords, just press everything all at once.

Does this make sense?

Thanks Darryl,
Does it make any difference if the backer veneer is a different thickness than the face veneer?

John,

Up to a point its fine. If one veneer is 1/42" and the other is 1/16" that's a bit much. Also, it depends on how the panel is going to be used as well. An inset door with tight reveals all around should have pretty balanced veneer. A small to medium sized panel that is fixed in place is less important.
