Just wondering what the technique is for gluing veneer seams when pressing curved work or gluing with PVA. Tape the glue side of the seam with blue masking tape, fold back and apply glue, unfold and apply solid veneer tape to the show side? Or some other?
Thanks.

Are you saying to let the seam dry before pressing your panel? I tried recently to do that, for the middle ply of a 3 ply curve but it didn't hold after I let it dry & then tried to press the complete 3 ply. I am considering trying the same with the thinner veneer tape & leaving it burried 2 veneers down? I have had success gluing a .055 veneer together with your method & it holds quite nicely before I press it.

I'm wanting to learn how to glue a seam between between adjoining leaves of veneer. The application might be using the PVA iron-on technique, to keep the heat of the iron from shrinking the veneer and opening the seam. Another application might be a similar situation, only using hot hide glue. A third might be applying veneer to a curved surface.
My sketchy notes say to tape the seam, fold one piece of veneer back against the other along the taped seam, apply a bead of glue and unfold along the seam. I don't know if one initially tapes the seam with masking tape or veneer tape, and if one applies tape to the other side of the seam (and which type of tape) before or after the glue dries. Presumably, glue squeeze out on the glue side of the veneer would create an adhesion problem.

Don,

you should try buying splicer glue from veneer systems. this is glue used for splicer machines. to use this glue you would stack you veneer and clamp the bundle between two boards. if you have an old spray cup gun you can spray the glue on the edges, after spraying the edge fan the bundle to keep the bundle from sticking. blue tape the leaves to the size needed, then go over the seam with a hot iron.

you can still veneer tape the face if you want. there should be no squeeze out.
