I'm having problems removing veneer tape after glue up. I use the standard white tape bought from Vacupress Systems with Unibond 800 glue. The projects are marquetry images with multiple exotic and dyed veneers taped up in patterns that can get quite large. The marquetry books recommend wetting the tape with water and scraping it off with a straight edge which I do. The problem is quite often this lifts the veneer from the substrate in small areas. I can get it back down with clamping but I feel uncomfortable about the strength of the bond. The alternate approach is sanding which I do but that leads to the dust getting into the various grains. I can't use sanbding sealer because at this stage the tape is still on the piece. And yes, I'm pretty sure I have a good glue down. I allow 24+ hours after gluing before removing the tape. Suggestions?

Brent,

If the water used to remove the tape is lifting the veneer then those spots were never glued down completely. I always wet down my veneer after pressing to find out if there are any areas that are not well glued. Better to find them now than to discover a bubble a year later when the piece is completed with the finish on.

I would go back and look at your pressing procedures. You say you are pressing marquetry, do you use a rubber sheet between the veneer and your caul? Are the unglued areas at the edge of a piece of veneer where it meets another piece? Do you get any bleed through? Are you 70 degrees or better through the entire pressing time?

These are a few of the questions I would ask to determine why you are not getting a complete bond everywhere.

Thanks Daryl. I think the problem was not using a rubber sheet between the caul and the face of the piece. The lifting was around the marquetry image which is at the center of the piece. The problem was compounded because the black veneer I used on parts of the image was thicker than 6mm and stood proud of the image. The field wood was cherry which I didn't think would bleed through. Wrong, should have used the blocker. At least I know I got enough glue on. But I managed to sand that little goof out.

What do you recommend for a rubber sheet? I guess the top caul then looks like wood, rubber, wax paper.

Brent,

I would use 1/16" natural gum rubber. If you have a local rubber supply company near you, they should carry it. If not, you can get it online.
