Hi. I've just joined the forum seeking some advice! (it may take some time to figure out how to use the forum.) I am planning to inlay a (walnut veneer)470mm dia. circle into a (redwood)tambour door with slats approx. 19mm wide x 12mm. thick. I planned on selecting very straight-grained timber for the slats to minimise the need to match grain for the tambours, then to begin inlaying with the finished tambour (glued up on a canvas backing & ready to go.)Decoration will be provided by the 'Cathedral Crowns'of the walnut. I will then rout out a half-millimetre x 470 circle in the redwood slats. Here's where I am stuck. How do I cut an accurate 470 dia. circle in the veneer, then cut it into 19mm wide strips, bearing in mind I'll only get one go? Any tips would be appreciated.

Ken,

First I would two-ply the walnut veneer so you have some stability to work with. This would make it stable enough to rout this walnut circle without the veneer chipping out. I would then fit it into the circle routed out on the tambour, draw lines at each slat line and simply razor knife out each piece. In fact, I think you could glue the circle in and then cut each piece.

You could also take the two-ply walnut circle, double sticky tape it to the tambour, knife carefully around it, remove the circle and rout out close to the knife line. Then chisel the last bit out. This will assure a tight fit between the walnut circle and the tambour.

This is the way I would attempt it.

Hi Darryl, (did you get my recent email?) Thanks for your tips, but it gets better - I have remembered the 12-pointed book-matched walnut star I cut out in your (Nelson) weekend workshop, & I'm going to try that. Only problem is, it has lain on the floor beneath our bed for the last three years or so, and is crinkly & brittle. So the first step will be to double veneer it - am I right in assuming the grain of the substrate veneer will go at right angles to the surface one?

Ken,

Because its a 12 way match and a bit crinkly as you say, I would be to create a three ply instead of a two ply. This will give it much better stability. Make sure the two backer veneers are ninety degrees to each other. With the 12 way, no matter how you do it some of the grain wont be at right angles to the backer veneer.
