Hi,
I have two vinyl bags that have been stored for about two years since last use. They were in the original box on a shelf in my shop. When opening one to use the nipple fell off in pieces and the bag had gooey blotches all over inside and out. I inspected the other bag still in the original box and never opened to find it also had gooey blotches and nipple had crumbled. Has anyone had similar problems and what can be done to prevent further problems? I would think these bage should last a long time.

Andrew,

I talked with my vinyl supplier about your problem as I have not heard of this before. They told me it was the plasticizers precipitating out of the vinyl. The question is, what's the cause? Extreme temperatures can do this as well as fumes from certain chemicals in the air, even if it is at very low levels. Without analyzing your environment it impossible to know the exact cause.

Thanks for your reply. My shop is not heated nor airconditioned. The temp in summer can reach 90 - 95 in the shop. The 4x4 bag cleaned up ok with naptha and replaced the nipple. Vaneered several items without problems. Still need to clean up my 4x8 bag and replace the nipple. Will store the bags in an airconditioned space from now on and see what happnes.

Do the poly bags have this problem ?

Andrew,

Now that you have wiped the excess plasticizers off you shouldn't see any more of that. 90 degrees or so isnt hot enough to cause your problem so it must be something low level in the air, at least thats my speculation.

Polyurethane would not have this issue. It also has plasticizers but it would show as a white powder not something sticky like vinyl, and probably much more unlikely to happen at all.
