Hi I'm making a pair of exterior doors, 3' slabs, 1 3/4" thick veneered in teak. Any advice on what to use as a core?
Thanks

Patrick,

There are a number of choices you could do for this but if I was doing I would use 3/4" MDO with a 1/4" sheet between the two. MDO is a product designed for exterior use with a great surface for veneering on.

Thanks, I've used the MDO before, just not quite that large of surface. Would you recomend unibond for the teak and the MDO ? Now that I look, It is HDO that is available easily to me, will that be o.k. or am I safer sourcing some MDO?
thanks for your help
Patrick

What skin thickness are you planning to use?

I am sure MDO would be great, but it will add a bit of extra weight to the doors. My 32"x80" interior doors weigh 80lbs each and I use spruce glulam cores. I use glulams for since I have a source nearby that treats me well, but I know many who make their own cores using a variety of wood species. Many used TBIII and some I know use West Epoxy. Glulams are manufactured using resorcinol so I know that would be fine for an exterior door.

If you are planning to mortise the doors with a small machine I suggest you be careful what core you use. Even mortising my glulams with a 1hp machine is quite the workout.
