I just did my first pressing with Unibond blocker added to the glue. I mixed the blocker in the recommended proportion by weight and could immediately see its effect in thickening up the glue. I applied the glue with a roller not excessively I would say. The results were about 50% better than without the blocker on sepele. But there was still bleed through which I'm hoping the varnish finish will hide. Is this result about what I shoud expect or did I do something wrong? I was very careful with my mixture so the only thing I can think of changing is the amount of glue I apply.

Brent,

I use 1 volume oz per 300 sq in of panel face, before cat and blocker. And I always roundup to the next oz. Some woods require a bit more and others less, but that's a good average. Sounds like you may be using a heavy glue application.

I use the blocker at about 30-50% of the recommended mix, with very good results.

Brent,

When we were first developing Unibond Blocker I used Pommele Sepele as the test veneer it one of the worst for excessive bleed through. We were able to reduce bleed through by about 90% but not completely. Most other woods were 100%.

If you're only getting 50% then I would back off on the amount of glue you are using. No matter how little bleed through you get you will have to scrape and sand it off the surface complete or it will effect staining.

Thanks Darryl. I'm not staining so I'm hoping I'll be ok. The finish is varnish.
