I'm doing a table where the top will be appx 46x108. Substrate will be 1" mdf, and edge detail will be solid stock, 1x3 appx, with top veneer running over top of edging. Need to do layup in two rounds, as edging has to go on after bottom veneer is applied and trimmed (top goes over edging). Using 10ml paperback veneers, and unibond in bag.

Each time I have a situation like this, I seem to go about it in a different way (usually successfully, thankfully). But now I ask the question. Darryl (others?): what is the BEST way to handle a very large flat glue-up re: platens and cauls?

Thanks,
Adam

My 1st thought on the best way? Let someone else do it? Extremely glad it's not my job given the overall size and weight of that piece of MDF. Good luck!

Adam,

I have done a number of long pieces (8-10'). I also have a 5'x10' frame press (flip-top) from Darryl. The thought of sliding pieces that large into a bag... Well, that's a thought I don't want to have.

The large press does take up some room, which I fortunately have in my shop. The entire glue-up assembly is done on the table (plastic, veneer, substrate, veneer, plastic, top caul, Evacunet). Then, simply lower the top and start the vacuum pump. It has paid for itself quite well.

Adam,

Before I go over the way I would do it, would you tell us how you have gone about something like this in the past? I would give me a good reference point to work from.
