Subject : Veneering on a plastic substrate update

Darryl,
How to keep a flat top on a humidor flat…?
I got the expanded PVC from McMaster-Carr. I scuffed with 80 grit and test glued some veneer with Gorilla Glue and West System epoxy (20+ hours & warm temps). The GG popped right off and the epoxy was easily scraped off with a putty knife. Both tests were a clean failure at the glue/PVC boundary (no PVC taken off with the glue). I then tried epoxy after wiping PVC with acetone – same result. I called McMaster-Carr and they are recommending 3M Scotch-Weld Contact Adhesives 30-NF (water based). So now we proceed to the debate about veneering with contact cement… What are your latest thoughts on that topic? I will be finishing with solvent based lacquer.
If I end up using contact cement, I could use that to glue on a base layer of veneer and the glue the final layer on top of that with UB 800.

Another option would be to use the Oakwood Veneer with the resin acrylic layer on MDF and then top that with my final veneer.

Tom,

I'm surprised you had no luck with the epoxy, thats what I used with success.

As far as contact cements go I think the Scotch brand 30-NF is one of the best.

The key to going this route is to have the face veneer glued to another veneer or backer so it is stablized. Then you can use the contact cement with success. That fact that your parts are fairly small works in your favor as well.

I was surprised as well. The description a Mc/C indicated "this material readily accepts paint, screen printing, and photo mounting". Did you use black or white? Do you see any problems with following up the contact cement with solvent based lacquer?

The best glue I have found for expanded PVC,or Sintra, is PL Premium construction adhesive. You can successfully veneer with it if you spread it very thin with a card spreader and get it into the press quickly before it begins to firm up (temps above 80 F. make this a challenge) and use an mdf caul on top of the panel (be sure to use some wax paper in case there's some bleed thru). If there is bleed, let a couple days pass and then you can sand and get rid of it. Staining on porous woods could be a problem, but clear finishes over wood work out fine, except on really dark woods. It would pay to do some test runs on scraps first.
