I found a recipe in the archives on this site to soften veneer. It called for a combination of water, glycerin, yellow glue, and denatured alcohol.
I get what the water and glycerin would be for but I'm not sure about the alcohol and glue.Would some of you experts please enlighten me. I've been building custom furniture/woodwork for many years, but I'm kinda new at this veneering thing. Still on the front end of the learning curve.
My veneer supplier said to use 2 Tbs. glycerin to 1 pint of water. Is that too simple?
Thanks,
Keith

Keith,

The addition of the alcohol aids in penetration and faster evaporation. The glue helps size the veneer so you wont get much bleed through and it helps keep it flatter than if you dont add it. Its not a must to add these to ingredients but they do help. The more ornery the veneer the more useful they are.

My suggestion is try it both ways on a couple of samples and see what you think.

I made some of the solution and it worked very weel for me. I mixed about twice as much as I needed. Does the remaining part have a self life ?

Kelly,

I've had some mixed solution that I carry around for when I teach and its still fine, have had it for years. Sometimes I need to stir it well to get the solids from the glue off the bottom but that's really it.
