For visualizing double book, "Pollaro" diamond, starburst and other matches, a pair of hinged mirrors are wonderful. However, it's always necessary to try to keep the common edge of the mirrors touching.

I had thought that mounting the mirrors on 1/2" plywood and then hinging the common end of the plywood pieces would make mirrors safer to handle and end the above problem; silly me. As the included angle between the two mirrors increases, a barrel hinge causes an increasing gap at the common end. Masking tape would hold the pieces more or less in alignment, but have to manually hold the common ends together as the included angle increases.

I plan to start offering decorative veneering talks to interested groups, hoping that they might bring in some business. Hinged mirrors would be used briefly in the talk, and a nice solution would be great. Any tips/brilliant solutions one would be kind enough to share?

At minimum I'll attach the mirrors to 1/4" MDF with mirror mastic so make handling safer, and use lots of blue masking tape.

Don,

Check out Paul Schürch's website. He sells hinged plastic mirrors. It is NOT real glass, so you don't have to worry about breakage. I have used it for starburst work and it was fine. The quality of the image is great.

Don,

I just use duct tape for my mirror hinges. In fact, I use it on all the mirror edges as it helps to prevent glass chipping over time.

Bet that generated some discussion the first time SWHBO used the vanity mirror after the tape job.
