I'm wondering if an inflatable bladder could be put in a guitar & then the guitar in the vacuum bag for the purpose of clamping the binding. My instincts tell me you might only need maybe 15 HG, if that makes any difference? Of course my instincts have been wrong before.

Mike,

Would the neck be on the guitar at this point as well? I'm not a guitar maker, what exactly is the binding?

no the neck would not be on. The binidng is a piece of wood approx
1/16 x 1/4. There are 4 pieces that go around the top & back.

Mike,

If the neck is not on I think you could make a bladder work just fine, definitely at low vacuum. You would want to pre-inflate the bladder so it fills up the interior space before applying vacuum.

Here's what I would do if you really want to do this. Make a stiff carboard mock up of a guitar and try it on that. Since it will be weaker overall than the real thing you will get the feel of how to use it and how much vacuum to apply. Another option would be a mock up out of 1/8" ply, probably closer to an actual guitar.
