I am in the process of making a lap desk. I figure it is a good first try for my new vacuum veneering setup. I plan to veneer some mdf with some bubinga veneer.

My question is what to do with the edges? my initial thought was to make a clamping fixture to glue some curly maple around it (maple will need to be cut in thin strips since the lap desk is quite curvy). So, now you see my dilemma: the lap desk is not square but curvy kinda like this:

I purposely designed the curves so that I could go around the outside with some sort of clamping jig. Maybe there is an easier way.

Any comments/ideas?

If you have no negative curve, a band clamp would apply uniform pressure.

Another option is to elevate the desk with piece of mdf or plywood, just slightly smaller in diameter all the way around, and vacuum clamp the edging. With either of these, probably need two stages to glue the majority and then double cut the overlap and glue the ends. For the latter, could simply use PVA since the ends will be relatively short. Could "clamp" these ends with making tape.

If masking tape won't provide sufficient clamping pressure for maple edge-banding, you may want to consider veneering the edges and then adding solid wood stringing on the top and bottom edges....Stewart MacDonald makes an excellent dremel jig for this purpose.

I’ve done this type of edging a couple of times using 1/16 home made veneer edging. I use the Adjustable Brand 3 way clamps to hold the edging in place until the glue sets. I use a few strips of ¼ inch thick low-density polyethylene between the veneer and clamp face to distribute the clamping pressure. The major drawback is the investment in clamps.
If the curve is very sharp I partially pre-form the veneer by soaking it in hot water for a few minutes and clamp it to the work. After it dries I remove it and then do the glue up.
