Hi everyone. I'm the guy who posted the question a while back about removing veneer tape. I have been using white, 3/4" veneer tape on the face side of my veneers. When I was ordering more I noticed that perforated tape can be used on the back (glue) side for tape up. This would solve my tape removal problem. But it seems like a bad idea because even with the holes I would think the tape between the substrate and the veneer would weaken the strength of the bond. Does abybody have experience with this?

hi Brent,

your assumption would be correct. it is a bad idea. not only will it possibly delaminate you might have some telegraphing if your veneer is exceptionally thin or light in color. the finish you apply to the veneer could also erode the animal glue used on the veneer tape.

I have used the three hole on the backs of some panels when they won't be seen. So far, I've never had any delamination but I do get telegraphing through the finish. I can even see the tape before finish while sanding. This is easily ignored because these faces will never be seen. (Unless somebody takes the piece apart.) However, to use the three hole correctly, one must align the tape exactly over the veneer seam. This is slow to accomplish. I've found that I'm just as well off time-wise to use regular tape and remove it, and I enjoy the work more. Furthermore... truth be told, I've even left the tape on some panels that get installed with that face toward a wall or back... places where the applied veneer is strictly for panel balance and not for looking at.

The only time I've used 3 hole tape is when making a two ply, and used it to hold together the lower layer of veneer. I'm guessing the intent of the holes is to allow some of the adhesive to bond the two layers of veneer directly over the seams in the lower layer.
