Here's somthing that's been on my mind for a while. I had a project a while back with a lot of applied panels permenently attached to a case piece. The panels are hard maple frames surrounding flat panels made from cherry veneer, front and back, glued to 1/4" MDF, and yellow PVA as the adheasive. These are built just like a cabinet door, and then screwed to the case from the inside. You'll never, ever see the balance veneer.

I spent as much time jointing and seaming the balance veneer as I did the good faces, so I got thinking, is there somthing easier to do to the backs, to balance the panel?? I'm not talking about paper backed veneer, but actually using paper as the balance sheet....

Any ideas along these lines? (I know this is a rookie question, but I have to throw it out there)

I can't remember where I bought it, but you can get a phenolic backer in 4x8 sheets. It's just a backer with no veneer attached.

Cheap, and exactly what you are after.

I'll see if I can find some old receipts to figure out where I bought the stuff.

I'm pretty sure Oakwood Veneer sells it. www.oakwoodveneer.com

Just kraft paper is not really substantial enough. Get the stuff Brian is suggesting.

The downside, in my opinion, to using the material from Oakwood is the cost. They charge 49¢ per square foot. Certainly Woods charges only 45¢ for poplar which is a nicer choice. True, one does have to seam the poplar but a bit of sloppiness is OK when it will never be seen.
