Darryl, I hope you can answer this...
I am working with walnut burl on flat panels. The substrate is 1/2" mdf, and we have glued 3 panels. Apparently we just lucked out on the first two, because they came out fine using the same technique, which was to use evacunet without a caul on the face veneer. The third panel has ridges in it following a pattern consistent with the evacunet. I hope the picture shows it clearly. After checking some other posts, it's clear to me that we should have used a caul, but it's too late now. I have to save this panel! It's 32 x 66 and I can't afford to have to replace the veneer, even if I could match it. Is there any technique; steaming, ironing, wetting and re-pressing with a caul; that might get me out of this???
Thanks in advance for your help.

Loren:

What type of adhesive did you use? Did you flatten the veneer before pressing? If so, is it possible there might still be residual excess moisture in the veneer? Is the panel just one piece of veneer?

Having pressed without a caul, it is quite possible the surface of the veneer is not dead flat - the evacunet and bag might have conformed to the surface of the veneer rather than force it flat. This might be only too obvious if the surface is power sanded or finished with even minimal gloss. Would that be a problem?

Loren,

If you used Unibond 800 or some other urea glue you could iron the surface with a damp rag. With yellow glue this idea is a bit sketchy as the steam could release the glue bond.

The other issue that the iron technique will not solve is the possibility that the glue has pushed up between the strands in the evacunet. At each strand you have hard pressure down on the veneer with no pressure until you reach the next strand which is about every 1/8". This is the main reason you always want to have a caul between the evacunet and veneer.

At least try the iron technique and see if this helps.

Darryl

Darryl and Don,
Thanks for your replies to my post. To answer your questions, Don, and maybe help some other goofball that does this without a caul...Yes, the veneer was flattened, and plenty dry. As a matter of fact, it had gotten quite brittle by the time we laid this third panel up. It is made up of 8 pieces, and is 32 x 66 approx. in size. There was a little bit of buckling starting to return, but I didn't think it would be an issue. Obviously, wrong again! We did use Urea glue...
Since we were in a bit of a jam, we agonized about ironing, but in the end we wiped the panel down fairly generously with water, and put it back in the bag with a caul, for about 24 hours. Great news - it worked. There are a couple small repairs to be made from the sand throughs that caused our consternation in the first place, but overall the panel looks great.
Thanks again for your input.
By the way, used correctly, that evacunet is miraculous stuff! Thanks!

Sincerely,
Loren Larson
