Subject : Veneering on MDF when 1" solid wood edges are required

I researched the entire postings and found what I thought was a discrepancy on my question which is this:

I am doing a federal sideboard with crotch mahog door and drawer fronts.

I would like to use 3/4 MDF as the core and augment that with 1" wide solid mahog edges (butted joints, biscuited to MDF, then sanded flush).

The fronts would be crotch with a sipo backer (cross banded) and the backs would all be two layers of cross-banded Sipo veneer.

The reason for the 1"-thick solid mahog edges is that I need to dove-tail the drawers and do my hinges/screws on the doors.

In previous threads I noticed what I thought was a contradiction by Darryl: one thread Darryl indicated NOT to overlay the veneer more than 1/8" onto solid wood (due to movement-- thread posted 1-30-06 at 9:19pm)). In another it seemed he indicated it would be fine to veneer over as much as 1.25 inches of solid edge banding.

In this design, the crotch needs to extend all the way to the edges of the drawers and doors. Any comments on this? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

William,

Mmmm, my wife thinks I contradict myself all the time.

In general the less the width of the solid wood the better, so if you can go less than 1" I would. The max of 1/8" solid is for when there would not be any backer under the face veneer. For 1 1/4" solid there had better be a backer veneer over it unless the solid was being shaped back so only a small amount of veneer was over this solid. Since you are laying down a backer veneer the crotch will be protected from the solid wood joint to the MDF.

I answered one of my questions....by doing a 1" wide perimeter of butt-jointed mahog around the MDF core substrate and veneering bothe sides (cross-banded) the panel won't move much (this panel is for drawer fronts).

However, cutting pins into the drawer edges means you are cutting into short grain (b/c of the mahog orientation), so it needs to be done very delicately or the pins will rip out while chiseling.
