Subject : Does it need to be flattened?

I bought some veneer from a guy that I've bought from previously. This would be the first veneer that has this issue or non issue. The project is a manicure table for the girlfriend so she got to pick what she liked. We got some "bees wing lyptus" or that's what he called it. Sort of a light wood with nice figure and color. The veneer is fragile and has a lot of small ripples (I assume the ripples occurred because of the figuring). Do I need to flatten it first or will it lay down when I press it? I have not had to flatten any veneer yet and it seems like a fairly involved process. I hate to waste the time if the veneer is just going to spring back into the same shape.

Thanks again for all the good information.
Phil

Are you going to be joining edges of the veneer? If so, and it's too wavy to pull together tight seams, it needs to be flattened. If pressing on a piece of 3/4" plywood placed on a sheet of the veneer yields crackling sounds, it needs to be flattened.

Flattening is one of the easiest procedures involved with veneer, it just takes some regular attention the first couple days changing paper. If you have a vacuum press, use it to "clamp" the wetted veneer; if not, 3/4" plywood and cauls and clamps will do the trick. Just don't rush the drying process. If clamping without a vacuum press, don't be afraid to give it 6 or 7 days instead of 3 with daily or even twice daily changes of paper to become fully dry.

If in doubt, flatten.

Next question is should I use the "home made" flattener or store bought? Are there any pros or cons to either?

I've never used purchased flattener, so I can't compare. If you need the recipe to make, you can find it in the veneering notes at
