Got myself involved in a goodie of a weding present for my son. I'm building a seilgh bed. My problem is I either need to cooper the head and foot panels or I need to veneer both front and back of both with a sort of elongated s-curve shape. I work for a high end cabinet shop and am a pretty good woodworker but not much experience with veneering. Would appreciate any advise. Head is aprox. 40X60, Foot is Aprox30X60.

Jim,

You can definitely make your curved head and foot board in a vacuum press, many have done so. You need to get yourself some bending ply, 3/8" & 1/8" for the form and curved panels themselves. You may want to get the "Working in a Vacuum" DVD which will cover making the form and laying up the curved panels.

Do you have a vacuum press?

Sincerely

No I don't have a vac. press. I am considering one but am having a hard time justifyig the cost. I'm doing this myself but I don't have my own business. The cab. shop where I'm employed doesn't have one either. It will probably be a long time before I will do a veneer project this size again. Iwould love to have a vac press but I may have to try cold pressing unless I can earn a whole lot of brownie points with the wife.
Do you think I could do it without the vac using mating forms?

Jim,

Although what you want to do with mating forms is possible on a small scale, it would be extremely difficult at the sizes you are wanting. Getting good even pressure through out, especially in the middle, is next to impossible without a press of some kind.

I don't mean to discourage you from this project, sleigh beds are very beautiful in my opinion, I just want you to have realistic expectations and a successful experience.

The only other option I can suggest is to get a plastic laminate backed veneer which then you could contact cement on, eliminating the need for a press. You would still have the issue of making the curved plywood itself but the mating forms could work enough on 3/8" bending ply to get you by.

Could you talk your boss into buying one? I encourage my spouse to have free reign on clothes, shoes, and jewelry. Gets me those brownie points.

Darryl
