This is a follow up or continuation of my april 18, 07 '4 ply sandwich'.
We have a good result now with making the 3 ply, with alternating grain either 1/16" veneer or 1/40", (still deciding). Then the burl on top & 1/40" on bottom.
I still need to decide how to glue on to solid walnut 1 1/8" x 6"
on the face with maybe 4 22 gauge pins nails to locate,
or; route a 1/32" deep recess, maybe a hair sider to allow for shringage? Either way what kind of glue?

Mike,

So, if I see this right, you are gluing a three ply to a piece of solid walnut , 1 1/8" wide by 6" long, how thick?

What exactly is this part for anyway?

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

the solid stock is 1 1/8 x 6. The ply whith an inner core of 3 pieces of 1/16 totatling 3/16, with 1/40 on the back side which is glued to the solid stock and 1/40 burl on the front,so 5 ply in total, the size is 4 x 4". This is a column 90" long with these little medalions top middle & bottom and the space in between is a routed recess 1/4" deep 4" wide.
thanks
Mike

Mike,

Because what you are gluing together is fairly small I dont think expansion or contraction will be an issue. I would make sure the burl is glued down with urea resin glue but as far as the solid goes, regular yellow glue should be fine.

Sincerely
