In the never ending battle to speed up drying time, is it feasable to use heat lamps close to a urethane bag. My buddie says he has seen it done with such and a stainless steel sheet metal caul in only 7 mins. for unibond. He through out some temp like 60 de. Cel. Can the bag hold up to this would you have to flip it to equalize the temp?

Mike,

During the winter, I use a quartz double shop light, to raise the temps slightly. I veneer in a 10'x15' room and also use a kerosene bullet heater to raise temps as high as 110F when necessary. This gives me full Hard cure in an hour. The shop lights are effective for most situations. If I remember correctly the poly bags are good for up to 350F.

Mike,

You really dont want to go over 100-110 degrees, as increased heat on only one side will cause a panel to warp. As Earl said you'll get a excellent cure in one hour and be at the firm rubber stage in about 1/2 hour.

By the way Earl, its silicon that can take 350 degrees, urethane can really only handle about 175. Although it can take a bit more for short periods you run the risk of permanent over stretching.

Sincerely

Darryl,

Your correct, I was mistaking the temps for the Poly bags. One clarification on the Quartz lights. They're only good for 10-20 degrees increase over room temp. I keep them at least 3-5' away from the panel being glued. And often I'll use 2 temp gauges one in the room and the other on the workpiece in the bag.
